Little Samson
Bart Yarick, 3 years old, son of the famous West Coast gym owners, Ed and Alyce Yarick, is demonstrating the use of the York Little Samson barbell in the show window of the Yarick Gym, Oakland, Calif. Gosh! Does this make him a Professional?
Mike Ferraro, who trains at Ken Stollar's York AC, in Buffalo, N. Y., won the Mr. Teenager title at recent Teenage WL Championships in Berkeley, Calif.

Boys Club
E WOULD LIKE to call your attention to the article by Lloyd G. Young, elsewhere in this issue, for a heartening story of how one man in Austin, Indiana, sponsored a barbell gym for boys with splendid results. The more clubs like this that can be started, the stronger and healthier our nation will become.
A lot of our old barbell pals of other years could find in this a splendid hobby. Lots of our old friends are doing this turning their basement and garage gyms over to the use of neighborhood boys. We know of no other Father and Son activity that pays bigger dividends in health and fun and energy and future success.
Incidentally, from such gyms are going to come the Champions of Tomorrow. Last year we printed a picture on this page of Pete Braginton, of Iowa, who was training alone on the Olympic lifts (he was 15 at that time). Last year he went on to win his class at the Chicago Teenage WL Championships, and we note that in the Iowa State Championships this year, he put up a fine 800 total to win the 198 lb. class. If Pete keeps on he may well be the National Champion in another year or two.
Just below is a picture of 15 year-old Fernando Collac, who is competing in International competition, and has a 300 jerk to his credit. Fernando was also featured in the Boys Club about a year ago.
RESTO
15-year-old Fernando Collac, of the Kresto & Denia Gym, Puerto Rico, was a sensation at this year's Junior Nationals. He has lifted 300 lbs., in the clean and jerk, and here demonstrates his solid squat technique.

The Teenage National WL
Championships
THE NATIONAL TEENAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS were conducted by the Berkeley YMCA, Berkeley, California, on June 29, 1957. The meet was organized by Ernie Marinoni, Physical Director of that YMCA, who has long been active in promoting weight training for boys.
We had expected to be present at this meet, but at the last minute were unable to make proper plane connections to get to California in time, so Strength & Health was represented by our West Coast Feature Correspondent, Ray Van Cleef.
The meet proved very successful, with some fine lifting, but since distances were so great from the East and Central portions of the country, representatives from these sections were limited to a few, including Mike Ferraro, Buffalo, N.Y., Alton Frix, Richmond, Va., Clarence Bass, Albuquerque, Gene Rader, Alliance, Nebraska. We hope next year this fine contest may be staged nearer the center of the nation to give more outstanding boys a chance to compete. Several new records were set, including a fine press of 170 lbs. by Johnny Beasley in the 123 lb. class, and a 230
lb. snatch and 300 lb. c & j by "Skip"

Two sons of former lifters participated in the 132 lb. class-Gene Rader, who won the gold medal, son of our old friend Peary Rader, and Ray Teegarden, who now lives in California. It is

nice to see lifting ability and enthusiasm passed on from father to son.
This year's contest was ably staged and handled, with Jim McNeil serving as Master of Ceremonies. This was only the second annual national event, and we may confidently look forward to improvement and added interest each year. We would be interested to know how many of our Boys Club members could have beaten the winning totals in their weight class. Will you write us your best total? We will try to make up a Ranking List of the Ten Best Teenage Lifters in each class, in you will send us this information.
